972 words; about a 5 minute read

Mission: Resurgere
Location: Executive Officer's Quarters, USS Vindicator

With her duffle now in her quarters, the Chief of Security now headed to see the XO as instructed. She carried her PaDD with her orders and double checked everything before she arrived. "Lieutenant Adrianna Baciami, sir," the thick Italian accent cut through the silence with some warm tones.

Almar's office was warm, most humans would almost call it oppressive as the door slid open before the young woman entering for the first time, while he'd never met her before, he'd been appraised of her arrival well beforehand. The Cardassian stood from behind his desk and unfolded his full height, the fans of his neck expanding as he breathed in the humid air, "I apologise for the heat, Lieutenant." he replied with a slight smile, rounding the desk in several large strides, "As you can understand, I have the environmental controls turned up slightly higher when we're docked, it helps me to relax." he added before turning and tapping a few commands into his console, "Computer, reset temperature and humidity to standard."

"This is Summer in Italy for me, it's nice to not be cold hmm?" She was similar in one sense. It was a homely comfort.

"I'm cold blooded, the heat gives me energy," Almar replied as he gestured to one of the seats in front of his desk, "Can I get you a drink, tea? coffee? raktajino?"

"Espresso, grazzi," she took a seat, placing her PaDD on the man's desk.

"Computer, one espresso, hot." the Cardassian ordered as he moved over to the replicator and waited for it to materialise, his calloused hands gripped the tiny cup as it formed and he moved to hand it to the young woman, "So, Lieutenant Baciami, your file makes for quite interesting reading, its not often that we see a switch from the medical profession to security... and such a quick rise through the ranks, I've not seen such an impassioned reference for your promotion."

"Thank you, some callings change. My roots made me feel better here than in what my father pushed to be a suiting role for a woman. My blood belongs in this profession as it does with my family's." She nodded and sipped Herr espresso.

"Well, whatever led you here, let me be the first to welcome you to the Vindicator and warn you not to get on the bad side of our Captain, she's got a temper as fiery as her hair," Almar replied as he sat back down behind his desk and picked up the padd that had been placed down, approving the orders and keying in the quarters assignment, "Your room is on Deck 2, forward section, Senior Officers Quarters." he added as he handed the padd back to her.

"I know, my bag is there already," she shrugged, " as for the capeetan, I will take your warning with a pinch of salt. I am not scared easily."

"While we're still docked, you do have permission to engage the quarter master in customising your quarters if you should choose." Almar added, continuing his previous train of thought as a bright smile crossed his face, "I have a feeling that you and Commodore Ivanova are going to get along just fine,"

"Who?" She asked, intrigued.

"You really should read your orders in a little more detail, Lieutenant," the Cardassian laughed off, "Commodore Ivanova is the current Captain of the Vindicator,"

She shook her head clicking in. Adrianna was exhausted after travelling and so needed the espresso and a good nights sleep, "it has been a long day."

Almar nodded as he regarded the look on her face carefully, she wasn't lying, she did look like she'd been worn out by the day, "Then I won't keep you for too long, I will let you know that I do expect a report on the status of the security department when you're settled in properly, I suggest you take some time to get to know your current staff and perhaps renew your phaser certification with the Master At Arms."

Adrianna smirked a little but quickly rid it, "so, sir." She stood up looking to her PaDD, "the translators here... Automatic or by request only?"

"The universal translator is built into every comm badge and will remain active for as long as you wear it." the Cardassian replied with a chuckle, "You should find no issues communicating with the crew though, most of them speak English quite well. a number of them speak other Earth dialects too."

"It's understanding what I'm saying that will make the trouble," she muttered in Italian. She nodded her head somewhat impressed at the translation herself.

"You shouldn't see a problem, Italian is fully programmed into the system, as are most regional dialects and the majority of common slang, there may be some discrepancies if you speak a rarer regional variation." he replied with a slight nod.

"You fail to see my point," she grinned slightly, "some things should remain untranslated for the sake of sensitive ears."

He did understand completely and he'd found himself often in the same situation, especially as a younger man while being tormented by the humans he'd been around, "There are ways to change some of the settings, just be sure to not fiddle with them too much."

She bowed her head a little as a relieved thank you, "deal. Dismissed?"

"You are dismissed, Lieutenant," the Cardassian replied as he stood and watched her do the same, she spun on her heel quickly and headed out of the door, once it had closed behind her, the Cardassian tapped a few commands in and reset his environment to the heat he'd gotten used to.
